Dual Language Spanish

ACPS offers Spanish Dual Language Programs at Francis C. Hammond and George Washington middle schools, for the academic school year 2020-21. Participation in the program requires previous instruction in the ACPS Dual Language elementary programs at John Adams Elementary School, Mount Vernon Community School, prior experience in a dual language/immersion program in other school district(s), and/or placement through an entry assessment.  

Starting in 6th grade, dual language students will receive two courses in Spanish:
Dual Language Spanish Language Arts I and Dual Language Spanish - U.S. History I (6th grade Social Studies). In both courses, dual language students will continue to refine their bilingual, biliteracy and social cultural competence skills.

Dual Language Spanish - U.S. History I

Fully taught in Spanish, students receive the same content as monolingual language students. For a description of this course, please review the 6th grade Social Studies course U.S. History I description.

Dual Language Spanish B

Students continue their study of the Spanish language as they advance and perfect their comprehension, speaking, reading and writing skills in the target language. Vocabulary, grammar and language structures are present in real-life contexts and are developed around specific communicative functions. Emphasis continues to be placed on the use of Spanish within and beyond the classroom, with the integration of authentic materials into instruction to aid students in learning more about the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.

Dual Language Spanish C

In this course, students continue to expand and refine their knowledge of the Spanish language and culture. Students are exposed to thematic units, emphasizing written and oral expression, reading comprehension and culture. The course is taught entirely in Spanish, and all materials are presented in the target language. Course content is enriched through the use of technology and authentic ancillary materials.

Dual Language Spanish Language Arts I

In this course, students continue to improve their language proficiency through language study that includes:

  • Reading increasingly more complex fiction and nonfiction text.
  • Opportunities for discussions and conversations on assigned texts and/or current events on a variety of topics.
  • Write descriptions, short narratives and poetry
  • Developing research skills and present findings
  • Comparing and contrast, culture, and perspectives of the target language, Spanish

Dual Language Spanish Language Arts II

In this course, students continue to improve their language proficiency through language study.

In Grade 7, students will:

  • Engage and enhance conversations on an array of topics
  • Continue development of reading skills to support academic comprehension and appreciation of a variety of reading genres
  • Continue development of writing skills to support formal and informal genres
  • Complete mid-year (informal) and final year writing projects (research based)
  • Develop and acquire information for basic comprehension on the relationship of the Hispanic/Latin culture and American heritage
  • Continue development and application of academic research
